Work is progressing to extend this line from Chatswood to Bankstownrunning under Sydney Harbour and the CBD with a scheduled completion. Early design studies are underway to extend this line to the upcoming Western Sydney Airportas well as additional lines between St MarysLiverpool and Macarthur via the airport. Sydney is the first Australian city to build a fully automated metro system. In spite of difficulties getting the project off the ground, government approval for what was initially known as the North West Rail Link, Sydney's first underground metro, was given in Route extensions and a name change to the Sydney Metro soon followed.
Services are operated by Metro Trains Sydney. The first proposals for a metro system in Sydney were put forward inwhen Co-ordinator-General of Rail Ron Christie released his "Long-term Strategic Plan for Rail" report, outlining long-term goals for the expansion of the rail network. The idea for a metro resurfaced in latewhen discussions about an underground 'Anzac Line' took place within the NSW Government.
The line would have run from West Ryde in Sydney's north-west to Malabar in the south-east, but did not come to fruition. The construction of the North West Metro was however dependent on the privatisation of the electricity network,  and after a change of the state's Premier in late it was cancelled due to budgetary concerns. The CBD Metro was to have formed the "central spine" of a future metro network, with a planned West Metro extension to Westmead and Parramatta to be constructed soon after, subject to Federal funding.
The CBD Metro was cancelled in earlyafter the Premier was deposed a few months before in In the Government announced the second harbour crossing under the name Sydney Rapid Transitas part of the 'Rebuilding NSW' infrastructure plan funded through the sale of electricity infrastructure.
The system was officially renamed 'Sydney Metro' in June following the passage of power privatisation bills. In JulySydney Metro was established as a statutory authority, tasked with leading the delivery of the metro system.
Since Julyservices take 37 minutes from end to end, at a frequency of every 4 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes at all other times. Services began on 26 May For the first 6 months of operation, they will be supplemented with trackwork style rail replacement buses for late night services from Sundays to Wednesdays. The network operates using 22 6-car Alstom Metropolis electric multiple units.
Each single-deck train features two dedicated areas for prams, luggage and bicycles. There are three doorways per side per carriage and no internal doors between the carriages. Prior to the introduction of services, a full-scale model of the new train was built for use on public display, including at the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show. Members of the public are able to tour the inside of the mockup.
In Februarydynamic testing on the first of the trainsets began. Stage 1 Metro North West operates with 6-car trains running on 4 minute headways. After the addition of the Stage 2 extension to Bankstown, the system will require at least 59 six-car trains to run every four minutes during peak periods. Eight-car trains have a design capacity of 1, customers, and increasing the running frequency to ultimately 30 trains per hour 2-minute headway would provide a maximum capacity of 46, passengers per hour per direction.

Sydney Metro uses the Opal card ticketing system. The fare system is fully integrated with the Sydney Trains network and the NSW TrainLink Intercity network - trips involving suburban, metro and intercity services are calculated as a single fare and there is no interchange penalty. Students who use the Sydney Metro network to get to and from schools can apply for a free School Opal card.The railway line will run parallel to the existing Main Suburban and Main Western railway lines, with the main aims of doubling rail capacity between the CBD and Western Sydney, and relieving overcrowding on the Western Line.
The line was first mentioned in a discussion paper released in September that investigated new rail projects to service Western Sydney and the proposed Western Sydney Airport. The line was announced by the Baird government as an official project on 14 November The government will use a value capture scheme to help pay for the project. The contributions from value capture are expected to amount to between 10 and 15 percent of the capital cost.

A stabling and maintenance facility and a service facility will be built at Clydeadjacent to the Auburn Maintenance Centreand Silverwater respectively.
The metro project serves a similar area to the Parramatta Light Railwhose stage 1 alignment runs between Westmead and Carlingford. The government have announced they will safeguard the ability to extend the eastern section of the line to the south-east via Zetland and Green Squareand also extend the western section beyond Westmead to areas such as the new Western Sydney Aerotropolis. The first of these was the Western Fast Rail which was proposed by a private consortium, linking Wynyard and Penrith stations.
The second proposal was the West Metrofirst announced by Premier Morris Iemma in as a possible future route in the Metro Link proposal. The proposal was carried forward to the Sydney Metro project announced by Iemma's successor Nathan Rees in It is important to note that the Sydney Metro project is a different and separate project to the current Sydney Metrowhich was first proposed by the new Liberal government in The project was prompted by congestion on Sydney's westbound trains and roads, the growing importance of Parramatta as a business centre, higher petrol prices, public opposition to tolled roads and environmental concerns.Opendtect

The proposal depended on the construction of two tracks from St Marys to Penrithas well as taking over existing CityRail tracks between St Marys to Westmead. Premier Morris Iemma was asked about the Western FastRail proposal, and said that "the proposal on Penrith has got to stack up," and "the work that has been done shows that it does not stack up, for a number of reasons.
The line would continue above-ground to Blacktown in six minutes, and onwards to Penrith in a further eleven minutes. At the time, journeys on existing CityRail lines take up to three times as long.The service commenced operation on 26 Mayrunning between Tallawong and Chatswood along the Sydney Metro Northwest rail link, which included the Epping to Chatswood rail link. In the first six months of operations, the metro service was supplemented by a late night bus service known as North West Night Bus, stopping at 13 bus stops in close proximity to these stations. The Transport Minister said the project would take pressure off the T1 Western Line which, along with the T9 Northern Line, was expected to reach capacity within the next decade.
Initial work is expected to start next year and tunnel boring machines will enter the ground in But environmental impact statements are yet to be completed, and money has not yet been allocated in the budget.

The remaining stations served by the T3 Bankstown Line - ErskinevilleSt Peters and stations between Bankstown, Lidcombe and Cabramatta - will continue to be served by Sydney Trains, but more detailed plans have not been revealed.
The extension is unlikely to be built for at least 20 years. First announced inthe line was to have started at Redfern Stationtravelled under the city centrecrossed under Sydney Harbourpassed through the lower North Shore and ended at the existing Chatswood railway station. It was to provide a second railway line transversing Sydney Harbour to ease congestion at Town Hall and Wynyard stations, both considerably crowded and unable to be easily expanded, and to reduce travel times between the city and the lower North Shore.
NSW Government confirms seven new Sydney train stations for Metro West project
The government's previous plan of constructing an additional CBD underground line was known as MetroWest. It was to have run from Haymarket in the city's Chinatown precinct near Darling Harbouralong the western edge of the city under Sussex or Kent Street and either ended at Wynyard station or continued over the harbour 'strapped' to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
This option would not have served the part of the city experiencing the fastest growth of employment, and would have necessitated the destruction of eight office buildings.
A previous MetroPitt proposal, travelling further east and under its namesake Pitt Street and through the financial district, could also be built deeper underground, limiting the impact on existing infrastructure.
Inboth of these corridors were protected with planning buffers to allow the option of future construction.
